mGive Raises $8.5 Million With Mobile Texting Donations

mGive has reported on their blog that the have already raised 8.5 million dollars for the Red Cross for Haitian earthquake relief, simply by asking mobile phone users to send a text message to initiate a $10 donation through their phone bill.

This isn’t the first time this has been used to solicit donations, but it is proving to be an effective way to get a large number of people involved at a giving level that is accessible for most anyone. Relief organizations will continue to depend upon larger donors for the bulk of their donations, but mGive’s campaign for Haiti represents a trend that will probably continue to grow.

Want to use your mobile phone to participate?  Here’s how, from mGive’s web site:

Simply text the word HAITI to 90999 to give $10. When prompted, reply with YES to confirm your one-time gift. The $10 donation will appear on your next mobile bill and 100% of the donation will go to Red Cross to help those hit by this natural disaster
